Incorporating History into Your Interiors

Interior design in Bangladesh has come forward in leaps and bounds since it started gaining precedence in the late ‘90s to early 2000’s. The interior of a home usually reflects the personality of its owner. Whether the interiors are eclectic, rustic or contemporary, it carries small touches here and there that show us the owner’s taste in home decor. In this blog, we will share how you can incorporate historical elements into your interior design to give your home a unique and edgier feel.

Home Interior Design

There are many different ways you can incorporate bits of history into your interior decor. You can choose to incorporate one element at a time, or use more than one in the same room. It will all depend on how tastefully you can do so, as well as the dimensions of your room and the items you intend to use. One of the best ways to give your room an edge is to take up a retro pattern and print it onto wallpaper. The pattern has to be interesting, or the design in rich, bold colors. The houndstooth pattern in colors like blue and cream can lend your living room a beautiful feel & look.

Another way to seamlessly blend history into a room would be through the addition of antique furniture or home decor items like  vases, decorative bowls, tables, chairs, beds or even cupboards. If necessary, the antiques could be restored–where the essence of the original is maintained, but a new paint or varnish job will allow the items to last for years in good condition, where they almost look like they are brand-new. You could also choose to not refurbish these items, maintaining the antique look to give your home an artistic feel.

History can also be felt under your feet every single day. You can always choose to place an antique rug as a section divider or a conversation piece underneath that living room coffee table, or even your personal bed. Rugs usually require some tender loving care, regularly shaking it and washing it monthly will ensure your rugs stay clean and dust-free at all times.

Items like vintage wooden or cane baskets, earthenware pottery, dry flower hangings can elevate your room, giving it a more nostalgic feel. Handed-down rugs that have been passed on from generation to generation will really give a historic feel to the room you choose to place it in. You can even frame these rugs and hang them on a feature wall like many would artfully hang tapestries, scattering them over the walls in each room of your home.

Creating a unique feature wall using old porcelain plates or saucers of different shapes and sizes can also give your room a retro feel. Try and combine some more modern pieces with the antiques and the heritage items to keep your room’s interior feeling fresh and unique.

Whatever you do to your interior, make sure it is well-thought out and the design flows smoothly. If any item looks out of place, rethink about where you can best highlight its features. Your home should not only reflect your personality, but it should feel welcoming to all those who enter it. Historical elements can add to the class and elegance of your home decor, which is why using it wisely could easily make your home part of the “IT” crowd.
